The Maltese Islands are a small island nation consisting of seven islands in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Malta is situated directly south of Sicily, east of Tunisia, and north of Libya. The largest of these islands, Malta, is also the site of its capital, Valletta. Other inhabited islands include Gozo and Comino.

Malta's lack of natural resources is more than made up for by its strategic location in the Mediterrean. For centuries, traders have visited Malta as a waypoint between southern Europe and Africa or western Europe and the Middle East. Also due to its location, Malta has been one of the most conquered nations in history. Today, Malta is an independent republic and the smallest (both in terms of population and size) member of the European Union.

Malta enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The islands are largely composed of rock and limestone with rocky and sandy bays and many coastal cliffs. The landscape is characterized by low hills and terraced fields.
